In the afternoon of July 3, 03, we were driving south down hiway 59 in Alabama, on our way from Monroeville to Mobile. Some weather was coming up in our way. We drove under a dense, well-defined cloud cover, and it started raining lightly. Soon we saw the cloud formation that is documented here: a wedge shape that seemed to touch the ground. We could not actually see it touching the ground, since we were driving through forest most of the time. The cloud did not seem to be moving. We kept driving slowly, soon entering strong rain. About twenty minutes later, we came back out of the rain. At that point,we could only distinguish some storm clouds and a big rain front to the north of us. Did we see a (not fully developed ?) tornado, or just a low-hanging thunderstorm that looked this way because of a perspective effect ?
Two movies of the cloud: A
(first) and B (a minute later),
and two more movies, taken after coming out of the rain on the south side: C
and D.
Now what have we here
?
