i went to the expo 2000, the "world
exposition", which had just opened in hannover. there were subject oriented
expositions, like "health" and "communication", showing visions of the
future, and country-pavillions, in which some countries made a big fuss
about stuff like their space programs (china), others just served drinks
(switzerland). it's all aesthetically mainstream, but some nice & impressive
things were to be seen. there were director kiosks till u puke and plenty
of video projections, too. my mom went too, she deserves some of the photo
credit. the swiss pavillion was best, a "gesamtkunstwerk". gesamtkunstwerke
can provide tiring, tedious experiences when done badly in all their ontological
magnificence, but they can be pretty good when done well, as this one is.
the best video projection goes to the german pavillion, with a short, immersive,
german-ness portraying piece. i expected queasy kitsch but i was actually
moved. (ahem...)
